Humanities Amped
Adelante Volunteer
Fall 2024 - Present
Through Humanities Amped, I've had the opportunity to volunteer at a nearby high school, assisting English language learners with their coursework. This experience allowed me to help students improve their academic confidence while gaining a deeper understanding of their cultures and experiences.

Working closely with students from different linguistic backgrounds challenged me to adapt my communication skills and break down complex topics into steps and digestible information. Volunteering with Humanities Amped has been deeply rewarding and has reinforced my desire to build inclusive learning and social environments.
When researching medical schools, I specifically looked for schools with global health and medical Spanish initiatives to continue building my Spanish vocabulary and increase global health access.

Volunteer Youth Soccer Coach
Fall 2023 - Fall 2025
I began volunteering on the soccer field as part of a service-learning course for my honors sociology class. I continued coaching because of the relationships I made with students and their families.
I served as the head coach of a kindergarten to second-grade soccer team. I spent time creating drills and finding drills, leading practices, and managing games.
This role has allowed me to challenge myself linguistically, emotionally, and physically. A large majority of the athletes were first-generation Americans, and their families mostly spoke Spanish. This role required me to step out of my comfort zone and attempt to speak Spanish with athletes and their families. I also guided the athletes through conflict resolution and helped them through emotions during games and practices. Through this role, I developed skills to communicate with young athletes and find ways to keep them engaged.

Volunteer Youth Cheerleading
Coach
Summer 2023 - Summer 2025
After starting college, I missed the excitement and community I'd found in cheerleading during high school. Because of this, I volunteered to coach athletes ages 4-14. During the summers in Minnesota, I attended practices and clinics to provide the coaching staff with extra support. I helped teach foundational skills in tumbling and stunting to athletes of different ages and skill levels.

Coaching cheerleading has allowed me to mentor younger athletes in cultivating the same love I have for cheerleading, and it also allowed me provide academic and life advice. As one of the few athletes of color during my time cheerleading, I supported younger athletes in a similar situation by offering guidance to help them navigate feelings of doubt and imposter syndrome. Through this experience, I was able to turn my difficult experiences into a tool to help younger athletes grow in their confidence.
